The wonderful Bengal cat owes its wild ancestry to the Asian Leopard cat. A small nocturnal wild cat similar in size to the average domestic cat. They can be found not only in South East Asia but across India, China and the Soviet Far East as well as islands such as Taiwan, Borneo and Java.
The male Leopard cats are generally heavier than the females but size and weight varies between sub-species in different geographical regions. The distinct variations in body colour are introduced into the domestic Bengal cat breed allowing them the exquisite pelt-like coat they own today.

The Bengal comes in two different patterns - The spotted and marbled. The brown/black spotted Bengal is the most popular with background colour ranging from palest cream to sandy and golden. Spots can be arrowhead shaped or arrowhead rosetted with two-tone colour. As the breed has progressed, the spots are becoming larger and 'donut' shaped with amazing contrast in the rosettes.
The snow spotted Bengal has a pale ivory to cream background with a good contrast between the brown/black spotted pattern.
Marble Bengal's have a clearly defined swirl pattern ideally running horizontally. These markings resemble a marble pattern which can be two-coloured or tri-coloured.

Foundation cats (F1-F3) are kept mainly for breeding programs. These cats can possess the shy nature of the Asian Leopard cat and are not widely available to pet homes. However with the correct amount of socialising and handling, the lower generation Bengal hybrids can be suitable for specialist owners who must be knowledgeable in owing a cat just a few generations removed from the wild.
